Where did I get that Virus from?

Where did I get that Virus/Malware from?

This is the most frequent question we get at our store Shore Thing Computers .Being specialists at virus and spyware removal as well as desktop and laptop repair, we see it all. Many times it is hard to tell the true source of the infection, it most likely originated from a website, but an email attachment or link cannot be ruled out.  On newer computers with the most updated browsers (as of this article) Internet Explorer 8 (Windows XP) and Internet Explorer 9 ( Windows Vista SP2 & Windows 7 SP1) FireFox 7.0.1, and Google Chrome  they all have built in plugins that can help detect these malicious sites and attacks. So make sure your browser is UP TO DATE.

One way to find out which website infected you is by checking you history but this is not recommended, reason being you can get re infected. Another way is to run a full virus scan from your Antivirus program (YOU DO HAVE ONE RIGHT?)! Make sure it is up to date with the latest virus Definitions,  you are still not and never will be 100% protected even with the best Antivirus program. Unfortunately the people who write this vicious code are always one step ahead of the Big Antivirus Programmers and always figure out a way to disable or corrupt you Antivirus software.  The BEST protection is common sense. You wouldn’t follow someone down a dark alley if he said he had a free gift for you so don’t do it online either. As the old saying goes if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

Lets talk a little about the main types of viruses and spyware currently circulating.

1)      The FAKE antivirus. This is the most common,  it is usually just a website with some running script that is constantly running a FAKE scan tricking you to believe it is your computer that is being scanned. Once the script finishes it again tricks you into clicking on “repair now” or “continue unprotected”. In either case once you click anything it will install the virus on your computer. Changing you desktop back ground and disabling your REAL antivirus software, changing the user settings and not letting you run certain software. This usually also redirects your entire web addresses to other sites further infecting your PC and trying to grab your personal information such as credit card, or bank accounts info . Here are a few pictures of what is explained above.
